English Banknotes World War II Great Britain Prisoners of War Camps Currency Sixpence serial number 846193. Camp 664 a Stadium Camp located in Catterick, , . Black on green underprint and WD (War Department) at centre in the underprint. Camp of Issue stamped 664 Italian Pioneer COY at upper centre. About UNC and a very well preserved example without claim stamps on reverse, rarely seen in this condition. This paper POW currency was printed by HMSO (His Majesty's Stationery Office) and was introduced in 1943 and issued by the War Department. The first mass influx of POWs into Britain occurred in 1941 with the arrival of 100,000 Italians captured in the North African campaign followed by the next large influx of both Italian and German POWs with the surrender of Axis forces in North Africa in May 1943, but up until these times the POW camp system was not extensive and consisted only of small numbers of German Naval and Airforce crew.
