The assassin was James Hadfield a member of a millennialist group who believed that if he himself was killed by the British Government the second coming of Christ would follow. Hadfield was acquitted of treason for reasons of insanity leading to major additions to in British statutory law namely Criminal Lunatics Act 1800 and Treason Act 1800 which resulted in Hadfield being detained till he died in 1841 in Bedlam. Research of this medal has uncovered just two examples in silver, one in the British Museum, another, in the Royal Collection Trust, was acquired by Queen Mary in 1935, this example being enclosed in the top of a tortoiseshell snuff box. D.Sc.L.L.D.) with exhibition buildings beyond FRANCO BRITISH EXHIBITION. 69.16 grammes, Eimer 1903b, BHM 3960, UNC with matt finish, in the P. Vaughton & Sons red box of issue. Cataloguers note: The exhibition was held on a newly-prepared site at White City, West London. Others to be held there and for which medals were awarded, include the Japan-British Exhibition in 1910, and the Anglo-American Exhibition in 1914. James Campbell Brown was born in Aberdeen. His father George Brown worked as a chemical manufacturer in London at Bow Common Alum Works. Brown was educated at the Old Aberdeen Gymnasium under Dr. Alexander Anderson, then at the Marischal College. In 1863 he joined the Royal College of Chemistry, London. He graduated with a BSc in 1867 and received a University scholarship leading to a doctorate in 1870. He taught Chemistry at Aberdeen and then went on to lecture at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary School of Medicine. He also taught at the School of Medicine in Liverpool. Campbell was involved in the creation of the University of Liverpool. He was also involved in water quality studies for the City of Liverpool Water Works. As a specialist also on forensic chemistry he was often called as an expert in court cases. He died in 1910, and after his death his book 'History of Chemistry From The Earliest Times' was published. W.J.Fernie is shown as Stroke position. The final elimination trial for rowers for entrance into the Cambridge Boat Race Crew for the historic University Boat Race. This is the only time prior to the Boat Race that the crews race over the full 4 1/4 mile Putney to Mortlake course. These race were contested intra-University Oxford v. Oxford and Cambridge v. Cambridge to decide the final crews. The Race still takes place today, although the medal prize has been replaced by the award of sponsored clothing and equipment to the competitors.
