As a relative guide to rarity, in the past we have offered one Die Number 3 and five Die Number 4 Pennies and 6 1877 narrow dates the last of which realised £5500. We also note the Laurie Bamford example of this die number 2 described as VF sold for a hefty £4000 way back in 2006 since when many coin prices have risen by multiples. The numbers were scratched into the field during the mastership of Professor Thomas Graham (1855-1869) have been shown by G.P.Dyer to represent overall output in tons of bronze coin minted since 1860 (the higher figure) and output in tons of that particular denomination since 1860 (the lower figure) This is not the example pictured in Michael Gouby's 'The British Bronze Penny' - Specialised Edition (Page 49) but displays a superb sharp strike. A highly desirable piece of Victorian bronze coinage history, as stated by Gouby there are only 2 examples known, this, Ex-D.W.Grey 20/10/1971, Lot 111, Ex-Seaby Bulletin, September 1974, item K162, Ex-Sotheby Auction 9/10/1979 Lot 257, Ex-Michael Freeman, and one other, the other example illustrated in Gouby's book being the Ex-Norweb, Ex-A.H.F.Baldwin example, described by Spink as 'Extremely Fine and attractively patinated'. A total of 34 'scratched field' bronze coins are recorded of all dates and denominations, made up of 20 Pennies, 7 Halfpennies and 7 Farthings. Of the 20 Pennies, 12 are known to be in the British Museum Collection, this being one of the remaining 8 available to commerce. An extremely rare opportunity to bid on a piece of Victorian numismatic history. We note a standard currency 1864 Crosslet 4 Penny in UNC sold in our March 2014 auction (Lot 1844) for £3978 inclusive of buyers premium.

Penny 1862 VIGTORIA error a recently discovered type, previously unlisted by Freeman, Gouby, Satin or Spink, only Fair but the variety very clear, we note also the error G is of a slightly different font to the G of D:G: extremely rare and believed to be one of only four known examples, probably rarer than the 1877 Narrow date coin, of which an LCGS Fine 20 example realised £7020 in our June 2010 auction
Penny 1881 Freeman 103 dies 9+M, Gouby BP1881Ga (dies M+p) Ex-Michael Freeman collection, with his ticket, Christie's 23/10/1984 Lot 65 (part), Fair, misty in parts including around the date area, listed in the Christie's catalogue as 'perhaps with H, extremely rare' hence the listing in the 1985 Freeman book 'with H below date (?)', rated at R19 by Freeman, with only one other example previously seen by this cataloguer, extremely rare and believed to be one of only three or four known examples, we note there were no examples in the Laurie Bamford, Copthorne, Alderly or James Workman collections, probably rarer than the 1877 Narrow date coin, of which an LCGS Fine 20 example realised £7020 in our June 2010 auction

Penny 1875 as Freeman 80 dies 8+H but with a raised dot below the first I in VICTORIA, Gouby BP1875Cd. GVF, we note a similar coin described as UNC or near, sold for £702 in London Coins March 2016 sale for £702 inclusive of buyers premium
Penny 1858 8 over 2, this variety previously thought to be 8 over 3 with die cracks showing thinly through the bottom of all four digits of the date showing an earlier stage of the die break associated with this type, recent research has stated this is more likely to be 8 over 2, indeed this coin shows a small point at the bottom left of the 8. Recent research suggest that this die only had a short working life (Source: Michael Gouby, article Spink Numismatic Circular May 2010 pages 72-73) A/UNC with a trace of lustre

This example sold at London Coins Auction 25/2/2001 hammer price £550 prior to Gouby's publication then described thus: We believe this to be only Bun Penny as such and unlike the 1897 and 1946 raised dot types, this is a perfectly clear circular raised bold dot. (a previous example in VF sold for £160 in LCA 41, Lot 919)
