The regiment was first formed in 1900 for service in the second Boer War, and has the distinction of being the first military unit to wear Ghillie Suits, a form of camouflage clothing, a net or cloth garment made to blend in with the background environment. From these scouts a sharpshooter unit was later formed and later became the British Army's first sniper unit
