R.J.Mitchell - Designer of the Spitfire Aircraft 1895-1937 Centenary of his Birth 1895-1995 Gold medal 38mm diameter struck in .916 gold and weighing 47.53 grammes, FDC in the Royal Mint box of issue with certificate and booklet, sadly R.J.Mitchell died at the young age of 42, meaning that, although he knew his Spitfire design was a success, he never saw the plane fly in World War II. He was awarded the CBE in 1932 as a result of his Schneider Trophy Seaplane successes. He never received honour recognition for creating the Spitfire, as official posthumous honours can only be received for gallantry and not for outstanding lifetime achievement.
First World War (2) Military Medal - For Bravery in the Field, to 302597 Cpl. James Houston 1/5th Battalion (City of London) London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) EF and Victory Medal to 4367 Cpl J.Houston EF, comes with internet research, showing 'Missing in action 28th March 1918'. The research shows the citation for James who was awarded the Military Medal on 16/8/1917 for Polygon Wood, after he took charge of his platoon after the platoon commander was killed. On 28th March the enemy attacked 'C' Company with an intense bombardment and the Battalion strength was reduced from 23 officers and 564 o/ranks, to 8 officers and 60 o/ranks. He is listed at the Commonwealth War Grave at Arras Memorial, France. Also World War II War Medal and Defence medal pair EF in a box with label Capt. W.E.P Tuddenham, and an assortment of cap badges, badges, a small hinged box containing two Edwardian stamps, a compass a sextant, a Military button and a worn Victorian Halfpenny. World War II group of four to Flight Sergeant Dennis Axtell RCAF 51 and 77 Squadron, comprising Distinguished Flying Medal, 1939-1945 Star, Air Crew Europe Star and 1939-1945 Medal, EF to UNC, Dennis Axtell was killed in action on 26/3/1943 just three days after being put forward for the DFM, when his aircraft was shot down and he and five of his crew were killed. He is buried at the Maucourt French National Cemetery. Comes with photocopies of documents relating to flights and also details of the crew on the final flight

A member of 608 Pathfinder Squadron, James Foley flew 57 Pathfinder Ops and 25 non-Pathfinder Ops. 22 of which were to Berlin, and during a raid on Duisburg his Mosquito was hit by flak, losing one engine and forced to land in Brussels
World War I and World War II a group of nine to Lieut. (E) Joseph William Brand R.N, HMS Gossamer 1914-1915 Star, World War I War Medal, World War I Victory Medal, 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, 1939-1945 Defence Medal, 1939-1945 World War II Medal, Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, and Distinguished Service Cross, George VI (1942), EF in presentation box, comes with photograph and copies of papers detailing the HMS Gossamer and details of the naval career of Joseph William Brand. The HMS Gosamer was a minesweeper of the Halcyon class. At the evacuation from Dunkirk Gossamer made six trips to and from that port or the beaches and brought home 3200 men. In April 1942 the Gossamer left Murmansk with two other ships of her flotilla to assist the cruiser Edinburgh which had been torpedoed. Gossamer rescued 440 survivors. Gossamer remained in North Russia and on June 24 1942 was sunk by a direct bomb during an air attack.
World War I group of four to Norman Vivian Saville, Royal Engineers 16th Divisional Signals Company R.E.1914-1915 Star, Military Medal, War Medal and Victory Medal, also British Empire Medal, and World War IIDefence Medal, and silver rosettes, EF to UNC. Also comes with a host of documents and Letter from KingGeorge VI. Norman Saville was involved with the same unit throughout the First World War moving all over the Somme and Ypres area and he would have been involved in Battles of Guillemont, Ginchy, Messines, Plickem, Langemarck, St. Quentin, Rosiers and the Pursuit to Mons. During these actions he was awarded the Military Medal which was mentioned in the London Gazette on 9/12/1916, he received a bar to that medal 29/8/1918. In World War II he joined the 66th battalion of the West Riding Home Guard In the London Gazette of 15/12/1944 he was awarded the British Empire Medal (Military Division) in recognition of meritorous service to the Home Guard

Duncan enlisted 10/10/1940, was sent to Egypt with PretoriaRegiment in April 1943, to 22nd Field Regiment, May 1943, to Italy in May 1944, and hospitalised, cause unknown, May 1944, and evacuated to South Africa . He was discharged on 2/1/1947., along with World War I to Welsh Regiments (4) 1914-15 Star awarded to 19532 Pte.W.Roberts 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers. EF. Pte.Roberts was killed in action in France 3/9/1916 and is buried at Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 4A, World War I Medals (3) the first awarded to 11085 Pte.G.Jones, South Wales Borderers, NEF. Pte.Jones died of wounds in Alexandria, Egypt, 5/7/1915 after evacuation from Gallopoli, and is buried at Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetary L.10. the second awarded to 8717 Pte.D.J.Evans, 2nd Welsh Regiment NEF, Pte.Evans was killed in action 4/5/1915 and is buried at Le Toueret Memorial Panels 23 and 24. the third to 9348 Pte.C.Lewis 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers.GVF. He died of heart failure in Calais, France on 9/12/1914, and is buried at Ploegdteert Memorial Panel 5. (All were entitled to the 1914 star and Mons clasp)
Captain Oliver Gordon MVO RN First World War trio (as Lieutenant, Star to Sub-Lieutenant) and Member of the Victoria Order, World War II (4) War Medal, Atlantic Star, Pacific Star and 1939-45 star, in box of issue with original ribbons, also military epaulettes, Captain Oliver Gordon was Captain of HMS Exeter, a heavy cruiser, during World War II during which she was sunk in the Battle of the Java Sea March 1 1942. The lot includes the Book `Fight It Out` written by Captain Gordon in 1957 describing the epic encounter against overwhelming odds during the battle in 1942. He was taken Prisoner of War along with the survivors by the Japanese after the ship was sunk in the battle. The lot also includes many Christmas Greetings received by Captain Gordon during his time as a POW. Between the two World Wars he served on the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert and the lot includes photographs of Captain Gordon, some with King George V and Queen Alexandra, also letters from Buckingham Palace one signed by King George VI, a restricted letter from Mountbatten of Burma, a letter from the Imperial War Museum, photographs of crew and ships, along with a copy of a newspaper cutting reporting Captain Gordon`s death. Also included is the paperwork details and letters relating to the Companion of the Order of the Bath, though this has been retained by Captain Gordon`s family
