Good Fine. Cataloguer's note General Manuel Belgrano was a founding figure in the Wars of Argentinian Independence. At the battle of Tucuman, General Belgrano led the Army of the North, and defeated the Royalist Troops, led by General Pio de Tristan, who had a two-to-one advantage in numbers, thus halting the royalist advance on the North West of Argentina. This together with the Battle of Salta on 20 February 1813 allowed the Argentine troops to reaffirm the borders under their control. The cruiser ARA General Belgrano which was sunk during the Falklands War 1982 was named after him as was the earlier 1896 ARA General Belgrano, as well as Puerto Belgrano, the largest base of the Argentinian Navy. Many other small towns and departments also bear his name. These facts alone link the medal indirectly to many different historical events

Hanoverian Medal for Waterloo 1815 awarded to Soldat Ludwig Schnat, Landwehr Battalion, Hameln. VF with some surface marks and edge nicks. Commanded by Major Von Strube, the Battalion was part of the 5th British Infantry Division under the command of Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Picton, who was the highest ranking allied casualty at Waterloo, and one of two MPs to be killed at Waterloo. The medal was authorised by the Prince Regent on behalf of his father George III in his capacity as Elector of Hanover and this was conferred on survivors of the battle.

World War I group of four to Norman Vivian Saville, Royal Engineers 16th Divisional Signals Company R.E.1914-1915 Star, Military Medal, War Medal and Victory Medal, also British Empire Medal, and World War IIDefence Medal, and silver rosettes, EF to UNC. Also comes with a host of documents and Letter from KingGeorge VI. Norman Saville was involved with the same unit throughout the First World War moving all over the Somme and Ypres area and he would have been involved in Battles of Guillemont, Ginchy, Messines, Plickem, Langemarck, St. Quentin, Rosiers and the Pursuit to Mons. During these actions he was awarded the Military Medal which was mentioned in the London Gazette on 9/12/1916, he received a bar to that medal 29/8/1918. In World War II he joined the 66th battalion of the West Riding Home Guard In the London Gazette of 15/12/1944 he was awarded the British Empire Medal (Military Division) in recognition of meritorous service to the Home Guard

Austria Medallic Show Thaler - 1683 Battle of Vienna 45mm diameter in silver, commemorating the Liberation of Vienna from Turkish siege, the defeat of the Turks and the relief of Vienna by Jahann III Sobieki of Poland. Obverse: An imperial double eagle brandishing a sword and sceptre atop a globe showing a map of Vienna. The sun rises above while crescent moon sinks below. Rev: The reverse has an 18 line legend describing how the Polish KingJohn III Sobieski, with 20,000 troops, relieved the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683 and drove them back to the Raab, and thereby freed Hungary. By leading the decisive Polish cavalry charge himself, Sobieski was acclaimed the hero of Christendom. UNC or near so and attractively toned, Cataloguers note: On researching this piece other examples were noted showing minor varieties in parts of the design, including the number of points around the sun and the date being shown as 1683 rather than MDCLXXXIII as shown here. We were able to find only three other examples all showing these minor differences, one being sold for $1600 hammer price in an internet auction.

Captain Oliver Gordon MVO RN First World War trio (as Lieutenant, Star to Sub-Lieutenant) and Member of the Victoria Order, World War II (4) War Medal, Atlantic Star, Pacific Star and 1939-45 star, in box of issue with original ribbons, also military epaulettes, Captain Oliver Gordon was Captain of HMS Exeter, a heavy cruiser, during World War II during which she was sunk in the Battle of the Java Sea March 1 1942. The lot includes the Book `Fight It Out` written by Captain Gordon in 1957 describing the epic encounter against overwhelming odds during the battle in 1942. He was taken Prisoner of War along with the survivors by the Japanese after the ship was sunk in the battle. The lot also includes many Christmas Greetings received by Captain Gordon during his time as a POW. Between the two World Wars he served on the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert and the lot includes photographs of Captain Gordon, some with King George V and Queen Alexandra, also letters from Buckingham Palace one signed by King George VI, a restricted letter from Mountbatten of Burma, a letter from the Imperial War Museum, photographs of crew and ships, along with a copy of a newspaper cutting reporting Captain Gordon`s death. Also included is the paperwork details and letters relating to the Companion of the Order of the Bath, though this has been retained by Captain Gordon`s family

McDermott was killed in action France on 14/9/1914, probably at the battle of Aisne where the battalion sustained heavy losses. The battalion was disbanded a short time later after suffering unsustainable losses.
