1580 USA Mormon issue Token, 1846 'DO YOUR DUTY' struck in brass with plain edge, Rulau-Y4, in an NGC holder and graded AU55, Obverse: favourite Mormon symbol of industry - A beehive, with a bird's nest, floral sprays with date and legend, the reverse shows another well-known Mormon symbol, clasped hands in a handshake, with legend UNION IS STRENGTH around, It has been discovered that in 1846 a Mormon named Peter Haws crossed the plains with the exiled Mormons and was the leader of a wagon company. Haws was also a private coiner and had been indicted in Nauvoo for counterfeiting U.S. coins. (It was noted that his counterfeits were of excellent quality.) It is reported that Haws had his coining press in his wagon, and while camped at Garden Grove, Iowa Territory, he again minted base metal coins, The coins were used as currency among Church members throughout Pottawattamie County, Iowa Territory, we note that, at the time of writing, NGC have graded only 4 examples, of which this is the single finest known at AU55. We note a similar example graded AU50 exhibiting considerably more wear than this piece, realised $3525 at Heritage in 2016 (Long Beach Expo US Coins Signature Auction - Long Beach Sale 1239, Lot 3373) £3,000 - £4,000
