World Banknotes Third Waterston issue 5 s Pick 92c (PMS BA101c, BY SC112c) and a very last and date for this uniface type 26th September 1944 and next to last prefix 13/R 2746 bearing signatures of Lord Elphinstone titled Governor and John B Craw titled Treasurer. The note in brown on light brown and grey underprint and Uniface featuring a panel at left with a motif in the Scotland Royal Arms along with the Royal Coat of Arms at bottom and a seal featuring I seal on top with motto "DEO FAVENTE 1695", the Bank's Coat of Arms at upper centre flanked by black value panels above a grey lion at lower centre. Printed by G. Waterston & Sons, Ld. imprinted in small script at lower right and watermarked with chain-like frame, Bank of Scotland text and value both in wording and numerical. World Banknotes Stanley Curister ESSAY undated 21st January 1945 similar design to Pick 97 (Calloway-Murphy BA 102b) serial number 8/Q 4233 signatures Lord Elphinstone for Governor and Craw for Treasurer black diagonally at centre. The note features a grey Scotia lion at centre, Great Seal of Scotland, Arms with s at left on obverse and reverse in Dark Grey featuring Arms at centre and value at centre left and right. In 1943 the Bank started to consider redesigning the £5 note. A committee was set up with a brief to examine ways of reducing the size of the £5 note and adding a printed reverse. Stanley Curister, the Curator of the National Gallery at the time, prepared designs for the printed reverse featuring the Bank's shield against a lined background which was approved in May 1944 after several variants were submitted experimenting with different coloured inks. The inks were produced by A B Fleming & Co Ltd, the long standing ink manufacturers for the Bank. A number of these essays have come on to the market, all in the reduced dimensions. Along with Pick 96b (Callaway-Murphy BA 98b) dated 5th January 1948 serial number H0159121, yellow and grey blue Scotia lion at centre no banks arms on obverse and reverse now in yellow-ochre about UNC - UNC. In 1943, ahead of the Bank's 250th Anniversary in 1945, the Bank started to consider redesigning the 1 Pound note therefore a committee was set up. The notes in this lot include the old and the new design where the new design no longer features a side panel with the banks arms and arms now on reverse against a lined background.
