World (10) an interesting and very collectible group of notes in various grades mostly GVF - EF to about UNC - UNC and comprising a Scarce Russian Civil War East Siberia -Chita 100 Rubley "Sparrows" Gosudarstvenniy Bank (State Bank) - Chita branch Pick S1187b 1920 Ataman Semenov's money issued by the Government of the Russian Eastern Border Regions, variety with cubes in frame on reverse. These notes were called Sparrows due to their grey paper and were printed later in blue reason being, whatever ink was available that is what was used to print. The fate of the “sparrows” was a foregone conclusion: even when released, their cost was 2 times lower than that of Kolchak’s “Siberian squirrels”. And by the end of 1920, their value was striving for zero. Biafra, or Republic of Biafra, did not have a very long lived life as an independent state and its declaration of independence from Nigeria in May 1967, due to rising tensions in economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions in nature, between the various people of Nigeria, led to a Civil War that ended in January 1970 with what is believed almost 2 million Biafran civilians losing their lives (3/4 of which small children) caused by starvation in the region. The starvation was in result of the complete blockade of the Biafran region by the Nigerian Government and it led to the surrender of the Biafran Forces to the Nigerian Federal Military Government (FMG) in 1970, and the state re-joining Federal Nigeria.

Offered Here For Charity - Bank of England VIP tribute Twenty Pounds No. 5 note Merlyn Lowther QE II & Sir Edward Elgar B386 Series E Second Historical Series Foil Hologram & Windowed Thread issue 1999 and a First Run Low Non-circulation serial number AA01 000005, about UNC - UNC. According to Duggleby the lowest possible circulation serial number available of this Series E Historical Twenty Pounds before this offering is AA01 000031. This note from the Governor of the Bank of England in the original anti reflective museum glass frame with a note reading "From The Governor Of The / Bank of England / Note No. 5 of New Series 1999". It appears the note has not been glued in the frame and is held by precisely placed small holders with a small gap for each corner of the note to be inserted in. It has become a common tradition for the Bank of England to hold back the first printed notes with low or symbolic serial numbers when a new issue is released. Such notes are attributed to dignitaries, royalty and institutions that usually receive or were involved in the development of the new issue, for example Her Majesty the Queen traditionally receives the very first 000001 note, the Churchill War Rooms received the new Polymer Churchill 5 Pound note with the end of World War II year serial number AA01 001945, and the Winchester Cathedral received the new Polymer Jane Austen 10 Pound note with a serial number AA01 001817 marking the year that Jane Austen was buried there. A number of first run circulation serial numbers, the Bank of England is known to donate in Charity Auctions for various causes and many of these notes are very sought after by collectors and usually realise high figures as for example the very first possible circulation number of the 20 Pounds Bailey with serial number AA01 000007 realized £2,100, the first public available Churchill Polymer 5 Pounds serial number AA01 000017 realized £4,150 and the Jane Austen Polymer 10 Pounds AA01 000010 realized £7,200. Uniface in black and white with value wording in panel at lower left and bank title at upper centre below an illustration of a farm field with resting cow, windmill, wheat stack and the Bank's monogram in 3 bays of wool. Colony of Natal was a British colony in south-eastern Africa proclaimed as such on the 4th May 1843 after the British Government had annexed the Boer Republic of Natalia. On the 31st May 1910 it was combined with the other 3 colonies to form the Union of South Africa and it was the smallest of its provinces and very popular with its beaches, mountains and savannah densely populated with big game.

The last of its design type this issue redesigned in the same colours as its predecessor in blue on red and yellow underprint now featuring the Bank's Coat of Arms on obverse instead of the Royal Arms, along with a portrait of Henry Schomberg Kerr (9th Marquess of Lothian), a port scene with ships and a view of Edinburgh castle on obverse. The reverse featuring a large panel with guilloche patterns and a view of Edinburgh city. A large sized note printed by Water low & Sons Limited certain to attract much attention with this last date of issue.
East Cornwall Bank, Liskeard 5 Pounds No. A/B 9157 undated circa 1870's SPECIMEN For Robins, Foster, Goode & Bolitho's, punchole cancellation twice at signature area (Outing 1195d; Grant 1680), a Scarce note in GVF with a faint pencilled annotation in the upper left corner and a roughly 8 by 5 centimetre oblong stain to lower centre with minor tears to it. Bearing the Charles Skipper & East London imprint and no watermark can be observed, this note displaying a Coat of Arms to upper left on obverse and an elaborate panel with value and bank title on reverse.
Ireland (Northern) Ulster Bank limited 5 Pounds (16) George Best 60th Birthday Anniversary Commemorative issues Pick 339 (PMI UB 95; BY NI.818) dated 25th November 2006 all UNC with the famous footballer's initials 'GB' and a limited series of only 1,000,000 notes only few entered circulation, most ending up in the hands of football fans and collectors and most come in consecutively numbered sets/pairs as follows - GB 274081 & GB 274082, GB 274086 to GB 274090, GB 284390 to GB 284395 and a pair GB 102069 & GB 102070 with closely numbered GB 102064. Each note in mainly green and multicolour featuring Queen Elizabeth II at right and as watermark, Gibraltar's Coat of Arms to left and a commemorative device with dolphin at lower left. The reverse illustrating a Barbary macaque at left, an aerial harbour view of Gibraltar at centre and a cable cart at right.

Scotland National Commercial Bank of Scotland Limited First issues (2) a very attractive pair both dated 16th September 1959 and signature D. Alexander comprising 5 PoundsPick 266 (BY SC611; PMS NC2; Douglas 2-1;) very last prefix for this type G 110517, presentable VF with a very minor 2mm marginal tear to lower right margin. Along with 20 PoundsPick 267 (PMS NC4; BY SC631; Douglas 3a-1) serial number A207793, Fine - VF with a 7mm uneven tear to right margin slightly extending to design but not affecting the note's general appearance and a Scarce short-lived issue with only 350.000 examples on record. Printed by Waterlow & Sons Limited and watermarked with Sir Alexander Henderson of Press , it had every note featuring an illustration of Forth Railway bridge until the final issue had a ship negotiating the wrong channel under the bridge, only corrected on the final £1 issue.

Newark Bank 5 Pounds last year dated 22nd March 1809 before failure No. 678 For Pocklington, Dickinson & Co. manuscript signed Wm. Dickinson and J. Cope (?) for entered (Outing 1488k; Grant 1998C), presentable Fine - VF slightly trimmed possibly original and multiple pinholes in body, Rare. Embossed Revenue stamp for 1 Shilling is quite clear at left obverse and 1 bankruptcy stamp on reverse with manuscript signatures. The note features the Bank's Coat of Arms and name in circular frame at left obverse and printed on watermarked paper where watermark reads "NEWARK" at centre and printed in an upside-down mirror-image fashion.
Wisbech & Lincolnshire Bank, Wisbech 5 Pounds dated 1st November 1894 No. X7721 For Gurney, Birkbeck, Barclay & Buxton, triangular cut-cancelled across manuscript signature of Barclay and entered by J. M. Bland (Outing 2382y; Grant 3252d), GEF - about UNC with a minor stain, possibly rust, to upper right. Black on white on obverse featuring a vignette with the partnership monogram at upper left. The reverse with a red-orange ornate panel with an oval vignette at centre bank name and "Issued Pursuant to Act 9 Geo. IV Cap 23." flanked by value and partnership at bottom. Watermarked with the unframed partnership monogram. For a similar cut-cancelled note of the same date with same prefix earlier number and signature of Buxton see previous lot
Provincial issue 5 Pounds (2) comprising a very early number and bearing the bank's creation year example Newcastle upon Tyne Joint Stock Bank SOLID No. 88 FIRST date for this type 2nd July 1836 ink-stamp cancelled twice and John Morrison signature for Manager,(Outing 1515b; Grant 5507), VG or slightly better and surely to attract a significant amount of attention by provincial collectors as such early dated survivors, considering this example is more than 2 centuries old, are very rarely seen. Also accompanied by a Stockton on Tees Bank 5 Pounds No. A/D 0659 dated 14th October 1887 for Jonathan Backhouse & Comp. cut-cancelled across main signature, (Outing 2049c; Grant2766), usual bank stamps/inked annotations & few small pinholes, Fine.
Kentfield 5 Pounds B364uncut sheet of 35 notes (5 x 7) C122c Limited Edition Commemorative issue in the original glossy money printed tube commemorating the 1997 Hong Kong Handover, about UNC - UNC all notes with special HK97 prefixes but different serial numbers, Rare. At the original time of sales only 50 of these sheets were allocated to the UK, although it is possible that more could have been re-imported, still a Scarce find

Some scarcer examples consist of the rarely seen 5 Pounds Lowther B397Experimental issues 2004 with examples of the 2 types (3) consisting of the Unvarnished type (2) serial numbers XC10 998415 and XC10 998415 along with the Varnished type serial number XJ36 997708. These notes Rare in any grade, very seldom seen in UNC in fact the current Duggleby prices these notes only to the EF grade with a price of £300, they were used to test durability and issued in tranches. 5 Pounds Beale White note B270 dated 3rd August 1950 serial number S21 081953.
