Afghanistan Medal, Second Afghan War, in silver, with 2 clasps, Kandahar and Ahmed Khel, awarded to 1828 Cpl. J. Denton 2/60th Foot, GVF, the obverse with some light scratches in the fields, comes with copied papers of Depot Battalions Pay List, Statements of Pay and Allowances of Recruits, and a list of Men of the 2nd Battalion 60th Rifles who have died, been killed, made Prisoners of War or deserted. This lists the death of Joseph Denton, who had been promoted to Lance Sergeant on 22nd Feb 1881, and is listed as having died on 20th April 1881, at Newcastle (Natal) soon after peace was signed. Also comes with typed history of his Military career in India, Afghanistan and South Africa.
Italy - Tuscany, Order of St. Joseph, Knight's Star in gold and enamel, 58mm x 38mm , gross weight 13.77 grammes, a six-armed cross, with ball finials with red-enamelled gold rays between each quadrant. Obverse: A figure of St. Joseph with UBIQUE SIMILITUS in a red enamelled border, Reverse: withy the inscription S J F 1807, NEF with some of the red enamel missing from the top of the medal below the crown suspension. The Order of Saint Joseph was instituted in 1807 by Ferdinand III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, (during his reign as Grand Duke of Wurzburg) and transformed in 1817 into a Tuscan Roman Catholic Dynastic Order. It is awarded for services towards Tuscan culture and civilisation and to the Grand Ducal Houses as a whole. The order was originally divided into civil and military categories, although these are now defunct. It is now divided into three levels: Knight's Grand Cross (30 members), Commander (60 members) and Knights (150 members). Sovereigns, Heads of State, and Princes of the Grand Ducal House and other Royal Houses, Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church and Tuscan Metropolitan Archbishops were excluded form the count. All members had to be Catholics and the number of women could not exceed fifty (excluding Princesses of the Grand Ducal and other Royal Houses, wives of Heads of State and Dames of the Order of Saint Stephen).

Reverse: Britannia seated left upon a globe, over which she pours coinage from a cornucopia, PRO PATRIAE, Edge: NATVS. XIII. JAN. MDCCXLVII. OB. XV. NOV. MDCCXCI. AET. XLIV, 20.90 grammes, VF/GVF with some surface marks, unlisted in gilt by Eimer, the gilt type listed by BHM as RRR (Extremely Rare). Note: Thomas Howard (1747-1791) who became the Third Earl of Effingham upon the death of his father in 1763, became known as a strong neutralist during the period of the American Revolution. A proponent of neither side, he disagreed with the rebellion of the colonists, but also with their taxation without representation. In his protest against any war against the colonies, he famously resigned his post – an act which later garnered him attention in the new country with the naming of a frigate after him, as well as counties in both Georgia and Illinois. After his military career, he served posts as Deputy Earl Marshal, Treasurer of the King’s Household, Master of the Mint (1784-1789), and Governor of Jamaica (1790-1791)

A near complete denomination set, these notes were captured by the British 1st Armoured division in the Persian Gulf War. During the attack into Iraq, and the dash across Kuwait north of Kuwait city, they overran and occupied a number of Iraqi headquarters, military installations and advancing 290 kilometres they managed to destroy 3 Iraqi divisions and capturing or destroying more than 4000 Iraqi tanks and armoured vehicles along with capturing several million dollars of Iraqi currency. The seized currency was sent back to England's Ministry of Defence Cash Management Branch where they were certified and given these hand stamps.
