The design shows a pair of flan an Edo era Fireman's signal device (Matoi), struck to commemorate the Prince's Visit to the Hiroshima Fire Brigade (April 9, 1937) the legend on the reverse shows the date of the visit. (E) Joseph William Brand R.N, HMS Gossamer 1914-1915 Star, World War I War Medal, World War I Medal, 1939-1945 Star, , 1939-1945 Medal, 1939-1945 World War II Medal, and Medal, and Distinguished Service Cross, (1942), EF in presentation box, comes with photograph and copies of papers detailing the HMS Gossamer and details of the career of Joseph William Brand. The HMS Gosamer was a minesweeper of the Halcyon class. At the evacuation from Gossamer made six trips to and from that port or the beaches and brought home 3200 men. In April 1942 the Gossamer left Murmansk with two other ships of her flotilla to assist the cruiser which had been torpedoed. Gossamer rescued 440 survivors. Gossamer red in North and on June 24 1942 was sunk by a direct bomb during an air attack.

WRECKED AT BLACKPOOL JUNE 16TH 1897 MEDAL STRUCK FROM THE COPPER OF VESSEL AFTER BREAKING UP diameter 37mm in copper EF with traces of underlying lustre, Board of Trade Rocket Apparatus 37mm diameter in bronze, Obverse: Port broadside view of a full-rigged ship at anchor. Legend: "BOARD OF TRADE ROCKET APPARATUS". Reverse: A large crown centre. "PROOF OF SERVICE AT A WRECK". The Board of Trade owned the apparatus which was held at Coastguard Stations. Users could claim expenses from the board. The rocket apparatus was used to fire a line to a ship in distress. The line then used to haul over hawsers and the block to be affixed to the mast. Once fixed a breeches buoy could be used, hauled on a continuous whip line, to take off passengers and crew one by one. It was used by Coastguards but also by Life Brigades and Life Saving Companies. The first of these founded in Tynemouth in 1864.Coastguards trained the volunteers in the use of the rocket apparatus. These Brigades became national institution until rocket apparatus made obsolete in the 1980s. (Source: National Maritime Museum)
