The two dates in the exergue signify the two American victories over General Burgoyne at Saratoga in 1777, and over 1st Marquis Charles Cornwallis British major-general in the American War of Independence. Note: This medal was conceived by Benjamin Franklin, who ordered its production. 300 pieces were struck in bronze, of which it is believed around 100 survive today, also 55 in silver and it is believed that two pieces were ordered in gold for Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
