LiverpoolShipwreck group of 8 medals to Captain Robert Capper, comprising Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society medals (2) in silver and gold, Spanish Life Saving Medals (one gold), a Lloyd's Medal for Saving Life, a Distinguished Service Cross, George V type, in silver, hallmarked, a Mercantile Marine medal, in bronze, RoyalNaval Reserve Decoration in silver, hallmarked, World War I 1914-1918 Medal. EF to GEF three with boxes. 'The Balmes' a cargo steamer of 3794 tons left Havana on 5/11/1913 bound for Cadiz and Barcelona, she had 103 passengers and 55 crew on board with a cargo of cotton and rum. A fire was discovered on board and an SOS was answered by Captain Capper of the 'Pannonia' which was bound for New York, arriving on the scene on Thursday, the day after the fire was discovered. The passengers were evacuated successfully. The ship then escorted the burning ship to Bermuda before resuming her journey to New York. During World War I, Captain Capper had been in command of S.S. Ausonia and was torpedoed 600 miles from the nearest port. 7 boats were launched, 5 survived the hazardous journey back to Liverpool. The DSC was awarded on 7/8/1918. Sold with numerous documemtation, copies of reports of the incident, including copies of the London Gazette and supplement reporting the award of the DSC

Baltic Medal 1854-1855 privately named, awarded to Cpl. H. Kilby 25 Co. RM. H.M.S. Gladiator. NEF with some light rub to the portrait and some deeper hairlines on the reverse causing a shallow depression in the field. Henry Kilby served in the Crimea with ships company drawn from the H.M.S. Gladiator with whom he had served in the Baltic Sea. He was also awarded the Crimea Medal as a Sergeant with bar Sebastopol. World War I and World War II a group of nine to Lieut. (E) Joseph William Brand R.N, HMS Gossamer 1914-1915 Star, World War I War Medal, World War I Victory Medal, 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, 1939-1945 Defence Medal, 1939-1945 World War II Medal, Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, and Distinguished Service Cross, George VI (1942), EF in presentation box, comes with photograph and copies of papers detailing the HMS Gossamer and details of the naval career of Joseph William Brand. The HMS Gosamer was a minesweeper of the Halcyon class. At the evacuation from Dunkirk Gossamer made six trips to and from that port or the beaches and brought home 3200 men. In April 1942 the Gossamer left Murmansk with two other ships of her flotilla to assist the cruiser Edinburgh which had been torpedoed. Gossamer rescued 440 survivors. Gossamer remained in North Russia and on June 24 1942 was sunk by a direct bomb during an air attack.
