Bermuda Government British Administration 1 Pound dated 2nd December 1914, serial number in red 008547, P1, PMG 25 VERY FINE. An extremely rare piece, black on green underprint with arms at left on obverse. This is the first ever 1 Pound note issued in Bermuda and the only one to be printed by the American Banknote Company, Ottawa as the following later denominations were printed by British printers, mostly Waterlow & Sons and Bradbury & Wilkinson & Co. In 1882, the local 'legal tender act' demonetized the gold doubloon, which had in effect been the real standard in Bermuda, and this left pounds, shillings, and pence as the sole legal tender. The British pound sterling then remained the official currency of Bermuda until 1970. In 1920, 5 shilling notes were introduced, followed by 10 shillings in 1927 and 5 pounds in 1941. The 5 shilling note ceased production in 1957, with 10 pound notes introduced in 1964. It was finally decided to take the action that British Honduras had already done 85 years earlier. In line with the international trend towards decimalization, Bermuda introduced a new currency in the form of a dollar that was fixed at an equal value to the US dollar. The new Bermuda dollars operated in conjunction with decimal fractional coinage, hence ending the pounds, shillings, and pence system in that colony in the year before it was ended in the United Kingdom itself. The decision to finally align with the US dollar was at least in part influenced by the devaluation of sterling in 1967 and Bermuda's increasing tendency to keep its reserves in US dollars. Although Bermuda changed to a U.S. based currency and changed the bulk of its reserves from sterling to U.S. dollars in 1970, it still nevertheless remained a member of the sterling area since at that time, the pound sterling and the US dollar had a fixed exchange rate of £1 = $2.40. The design makes it a bit of an outlier as it does not feature any royal portraits.

Scotland 1 Guinea The Royal Bank of Scotland First Lizars Issue dated 4th November 1826 signed James More for the Accountant and Archibald Bonar for the Cashier. Calloway and Murphy RB38. Vignette of Neptune & Britannia upper centre surmounted by crown, Pay Andrew Bogle or the bearer and an elaborate printed reverse. William Home Lizars the printer and engraver who prepared some of Scotland's finest banknote designs, was asked to engrave new £1 and 1 Guinea notes in 1825. There was already a family connection with the bank as his father Daniel Lizars had been a customer since at least 1799 and William himself had been granted a credit of £300 in 1812 'upon an obligation Sir Alex Jardine, Bart (his brother-in-law) and Charles Stewart Printer in Edinburgh being in place of one held by Daniel Lizars, Engraver here.' (his father Daniel had just died). Both the £1 and 1 Guinea notes employ a much more intricate and detailed engraving techniques possible when using harder steel plate. Lizars was at the forefront of these techniques. Both the £1 and the 1 Guinea for the first time for the Royal Bank have printed reverses. These 1 Guinea notes are the last to be issued by the Royal Bank whose minutes indicated that some 550 books at 400 notes per book were issued (= 220,000 notes). Issuance ceased in February 1830 after yet another forgery. The bank's records refer to Steel Plates No. 1 to No. 3, from which it is inferred that the original plate was re-engraved, perhaps in response to forgeries. About Fine with pinholes

The Turkish government cancelled the issue and arranged for another instead. All available examples were rescued from the sea therefore signs of salt water damage are to be expected. "There is no official recovery record of the 100 Lira notes from the wreck. They were not handed over by the Greek authorities to the Republic of Turkey like the 50 Kurus notes. It is believed the notes that escaped confiscation were also introduced by Greek and non-Muslim tradesmen and put into circulation in the smaller provinces of Turkey, where communications were poor. The variety of notes confused the public, who were not in a position to tell if the notes were legitimate or not. What is certain is these original notes are extremely rare. Only two pieces were reportedly seen in Turkey in the last few decades. The same is true for the 50 Lira note (P136). Not more than a couple has ever been reported. Although also very hard to acquire, Thomas De La Ruespecimen notes remain the best bet for filling this historic gap in a bank note collection of Turkish Republic issues."
