A key date Victorian rarity, with the large date accounting for only a small percentage of the overall mintage and by far the rarer type for this date, the two date sizes not differentiated by ESC, Bull or Davies. We note also that only two examples of the large date type have been graded by LCGS, the finest being LCGS 65, which realised £700 hammer price when auctioned in LCA A170 September 6th 2010

Five Guineas 1701 Fine Work S.3456 with an edge crack at 7 o'clock on the obverse, VF with traces of expert edge repair on the IM of DECIMO and the IM of SEPTIMO so perhaps ex-jewellery, however the coin's surfaces show no evidence of being in jewellery. An impressive and imposing issue, the Fine Work Five Guineas was a highly important coin in the history of the milled coinage, it introduced more intricate detail and a superb sharp striking to the portrait, marking a significant advance to the quality of minting at the time, leading to further higher relief designs being produced in the 18th Century, right up to the introduction of the later machine-made milled coinage

Afghanistan Medal, Second Afghan War, in silver, with 2 clasps, Kandahar and Ahmed Khel, awarded to 1828 Cpl. J. Denton 2/60th Foot, GVF, the obverse with some light scratches in the fields, comes with copied papers of Depot Battalions Pay List, Statements of Pay and Allowances of Recruits, and a list of Men of the 2nd Battalion 60th Rifles who have died, been killed, made Prisoners of War or deserted. This lists the death of Joseph Denton, who had been promoted to Lance Sergeant on 22nd Feb 1881, and is listed as having died on 20th April 1881, at Newcastle (Natal) soon after peace was signed. Also comes with typed history of his Military career in India, Afghanistan and South Africa.
